The Importance of Wearing a Helmet While Riding Your E-Scooter

If you’re planning on hopping onto an electric scooter, then remember – helmets are a must! Whether it's for short trips around the neighborhood or longer rides across town, helmets are essential in keeping you safe and preventing head injuries. In many countries and states, wearing helmets when riding e-scooters is compulsory by law.

Is it mandatory to wear a helmet when riding an e-scooter?

It ultimately comes down to the locality; while in certain countries or states electric scooters are legal, some may enforce a law that requires all riders - no matter their age - to wear a helmet. Other localities could have specific age requirements when it comes to riding without one.

For example in countries as Norway, Denmark or Spain, wearing a helmet when riding on an electric scooter is compulsory by law. However on other european countries as France or the Uk they are not mandatory.

Our advice? While you should definitely double-check the position of your local regulator on e scooter helmet and find out whether it is compulsory, we believe you should always wear one, even if it’s not mandatory. The helmet protects your skull and therefore brain which is one of the most important parts of your body. As the old adage goes, it is always ‘better to be safe than sorry’, and with road vehicles, one can never be cautious enough.

Can bike helmets be used for electric scooters?

In short, yes. Bike helmets are usually designed to protect the head from impacts and should be just as effective if you use them for e-scooters. Take into account the certifications and test helmets must pass. For europe for example a regular bike helmet and e-scooter helmet should be EN1078 approved. That means that a bicycle helmet can be used for e bike, electric scooter riders or regular bicycles.

Another thing that separates helmets for e-scooters from bike helmets is that the former has more air vents, providing better ventilation for those longer rides in summer months. In addition, helmets for e-scooters tend to be lighter than bike helmets. An UV visor or bug net might also be a good feature for an e scooter or e-bike helmet .
